New York City Subway

Category: New York Sites

The New York City Subway is the fourth busiest subway system in the wold only beaten out by Korea, Japan and Russia. It is owned by the City of New York and leased to the New York City Transit Authority a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authoriity and also known as New York City Transit. It is one of the oldest and most extensive public transportation systems in the world, with 468 stations and about 700 miles of track. In 2010, the subway delivered over 1.604 billion rides, averaging over five million (5,156,913 rides) on weekdays, over three million (3,031,289 rides) on Saturdays, and over two million (2,335,077 rides) on Sundays.

If you plan to ride the Subway System in New York, be sure to purchase a Metrocard. Cards can be purchased from Subway Tellers (Station Agents), vending machines located at train stations and even in many New York City convenience stores and Stands.  If you are visiting New York, we recommend that you purchase an unlimited Metrocard that can be purchased for one day use, one week use, or monthly unlimited rides depending on the length of your stay in New York.

New York City has Uptown Trains (heading North) and Downtown Trains (heading South).  For the most part if you are heading from Manhattan to the Bronx or Queens, you will need and uptown train. If you are heading from Brooklyn to Manhattan you will also need an uptown train. If you are heading from the Bronx or Queens to Manhattan, you will need a downtown train. If you are heading from Manhattan to Brooklyn you will need a downtown train.  While in Manhattan, if you are going to a higher number street, you will need an uptown train and if you are going to a lower number street you will need a downtown train.

What makes NYC Transit different from many other like systems is that it has express and local train.  If you   need to go to a local station be sure to transfer that the express stop before your destination.  If you forget and miss your local station, just stay on the express train to the next express stop, switch from an uptown to the downtown platform (or from the downtown to the uptown platform depending on the direction you are heading) and take the local train back to you bypassed station. (note: When there are service changes due to necessary track work, service changes often work like this)
