The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States stretching 5989 feet over the East River connecting the New York City Boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge carries approximately 145,000 vehicles back and forth from these two boroughs. In addition, the Brooklyn Bridge is a popular walkway for both City Residents and Tourist. It has a wide pedestrian walkway down the center of the Bridge, open for walkers and cyclists. This elevated walkway is above the car traffic lanes and allows for for great views.
Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge began in 1870 and was completed in 1883. It cost $18 Million to build. There were over 20 deaths as the bridge was being constructed. When it was completed it was the largest suspension bridge in the world. For several years the towers were tallest structures in the Western Hemisphere. In 1964, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Brooklyn Bridge was used by New Yorker's to get to work during New York City Subway strikes and to get home from work when the Subway was shut down after the World Trade Center bombing on September 11, 2001. The Bridge can be reached in lower Manhattan from the South Street Seaport and Brooklyn Heights in Brooklyn. .
